This work explores rhythms found within and created by nature. It is scored for piano, one marimba, two players, & audio recording.
The audio recordings are taken from three locations in Japan:
Miyajima Island, Outside Hiroshima
Osaka Castle, Osaka
Nijo Castle, Kyoto
Cicadas each have their own unique sound and rhythmic call. When hundreds of thousands of them converge, you can observe the natural phasing of their rhythmic calls. Melodic and rhythmic motifs are taken from the cicada calls and wind chimes in Nijo Castle, & you'll hear the recording bookend the piece.
